Every major system in your house has a countdown clock — and knowing where each one stands is the difference between replacing a water heater on your schedule and replacing it at 11pm with a flooded utility room. Here are the typical lifespans, assuming normal use and routine maintenance.

Almost every manufacturer stamps the production date into the serial number on the nameplate — but each brand hides it differently: Rheem uses the first four digits as month/year, Carrier and Bryant encode week and year, GE uses a letter code, and so on.
